Against this backdrop, some people have suggested that the United States should assassinate Kim Jong Un.
There are a number of reasons why this course of action would be a bad idea. First, it is unclear whether or not it would actually work. Kim Jong Un is surrounded by bodyguards and lives in a heavily fortified compound. It is unlikely that the United States would be able to kill him with a single strike, and even if they did, it is not clear what would happen next. There is a risk that assassinating Kim Jong Un would lead to a violent power struggle in North Korea that could lead to even more instability in the region.

There are many potential reasons why we don’t assassinate Kim Jong Un. Maybe we don’t want to incite a war, or maybe we don’t have good intelligence on his location. Maybe we think it would be ineffective or counterproductive, or maybe we simply don’t have the capability to do so.
