Ioseb Jughashvili, better known as Joseph Stalin, was born in Gori, Georgia, in 1878. The young Stalin was educated at a local Orthodox school before moving to Tiflis (modern-day Tbilisi) to attend the Tiflis Seminary. Stalin’s time at the seminary was cut short, however, when he was expelled for his involvement in revolutionary activities. Undeterred, Stalin continued his studies on his own and became a well-known figure in the Georgian social and political scene. In 1917, Stalin played a key role in the Bolshevik Revolution, and after the formation of the Soviet Union, he became its first leader. Stalin ruled the Soviet Union with an iron fist, and his policies led to the death and suffering of millions. However, he also oversaw the Soviet Union’s transformation into a world superpower, and his legacy continues to be debated to this day.<\/p>\n
