Is North Korea communist or democrat?

Since the end of economic aid from the Soviet Union after its dissolution in 1991, North Korea has been struggling to keep up its economy. The impractical ideological application of Stalinist policies in North Korea over years of economic slowdown in the 1980s and receding during the 1990s has made it difficult for the country to maintain its Communist ideals. However, North Korea continues to nominally uphold Communism, but has replaced many of its original policies with more practical ones in order to keep up with the changing times.

The Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) is the ruling political party of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). It was founded on 23 November 1946 through the merger of the Communist Party of South Korea, New People’s Party of Korea and a faction of the People’s Party of Korea (the so-called ‘forty-eighters’). The WPK is the largest party in North Korea, holding a majority of seats in the Supreme People’s Assembly and leading the government. The party also controls the media and the military through its powerful organizational structures.
