Kim Jong-il was the Eternal Chairman and General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, and the Grand Marshal of the Korean People’s Army, serving as the supreme leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from 1994 to 2011. He was born in the Soviet Union to North Korean parents and was raised in the DPRK, receiving formal education in Russia and China. After his father Kim Il-sung’s death in 1994, he succeeded him as the supreme leader of the DPRK and was given the title of “Eternal President” of the country in 1998. <\/p>\n

Kim Jong-il’s rule was characterized by human rights abuses, economic mismanagement, and a nuclear weapons program. He died of a heart attack on December 17, 2011, and was succeeded by his son Kim Jong-un.<\/p>\n
