How long has North Korea been a dictatorship?

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) is an authoritarian state led by the Kim family for 70 years. Shortly after Kim Jong Il’s death in late 2011, his son Kim Jong Un was named marshal of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People’s Army. Jong Un’s rule has been characterized by human rights abuses, nuclear proliferation, and a growing hostility towards the United States and its allies. In 2017, the United Nations imposed its strongest sanctions ever against North Korea in an effort to force the regime to abandon its nuclear weapons program. The DPRK remains one of the most isolated and repressive countries in the world.

Kim Jong-un became North Korea’s Supreme Leader on 29 December 2011. He married Ri Sol-ju in either 2009 or 2010, and the couple reportedly had a daughter, Kim Ju-ae, in 2012. Kim Jong-un is the third and youngest son of Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011, and the grandson of Kim Il-sung, North Korea’s founder. Like his father and grandfather, Kim Jong-un is considered a deity in North Korea’s Juche cult of personality. He has been portrayed as the “Great Successor” and “Brilliant Comrade”.
