Benito Mussolini was an Italian nationalist and the founder of Italian Fascism. He ruled Italy from 1922–1925 as Prime Minister, and from 1925–1943 as il Duce, the Fascist dictator. Mussolini’s Fascist takeover of Italy was an inspiration and example for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany. By the early 1930s, Hitler and the Nazis were admirers of Mussolini and Fascism, and they modeled many of their policies and tactics on those of the Italians.<\/p>\n

Mussolini’s goal was to establish himself as a dictator, and he did so by, for instance, constructing the Italian parliament such that it benefitted the fascists. In this way, he created a totalitarian state in which he had complete control.<\/p>\n
The Lateran Treaty was a treaty between Mussolini and the Pope that recognized the Pope as the sovereign ruler of the Vatican City State. This treaty made Roman Catholicism the state religion of Fascist Italy.<\/p>\n
