Mussolini’s father was a blacksmith and his mother a schoolteacher. As a young man, he was a committed socialist and was expelled from school for his political beliefs. Mussolini founded the Fascist party in 1919 and became Prime Minister in 1922. He ruled Italy with an iron fist, crushed dissent, and allied himself with Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. Mussolini was ousted from power in 1943 and executed by Italian partisans in 1945.<\/p>\n
